Auto Body Shop Tax Deductions: Paint, Parts, Equipment, and Facility Costs
Auto body and collision repair shops have one of the highest cost-of-goods-sold ratios among trade businesses. Parts and materials (body panels, paint, clear coat, primers, fillers, sandpaper, masking supplies) account for 35-45% of revenue, making them the largest deduction category. Equipment is the second major category: a paint booth ($15,000-$50,000), frame straightening machine ($15,000-$40,000), and specialized tools ($10,000-$30,000) are all eligible for Section 179 or bonus depreciation. Facility costs are significant too, as body shops require large spaces with specific ventilation, electrical, and fire suppression systems. These leasehold improvements qualify as Qualified Improvement Property (QIP) with a 15-year recovery period and bonus depreciation eligibility.
