DJ and Entertainment Business: Entity Structure, S-Corp Election, and Tax Planning

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Event DJing (selecting and playing recorded music at weddings, corporate events, and parties) isn’t a Specified Service Trade or Business (SSTB) under IRC 199A. DJing is a technical service (equipment operation, sound engineering, music selection) rather than a performing art. The performing arts SSTB classification under IRC 199A applies to actors, singers, musicians performing original compositions, and similar performers. A DJ who plays pre-recorded music and operates sound/lighting equipment is providing a technical entertainment service, not performing arts. This distinction means the full 20% QBI deduction applies at any income level.

✓Key takeaway

DJ business tax profile:

SSTB status: NOT an SSTB. Playing recorded music at events is a technical service (operating equipment, managing playlists, running sound/lighting), not performing arts. A DJ who also performs as a live musician (singing, playing instruments) has a mixed-use situation: the DJ portion isn’t SSTB, the live performance portion is SSTB. If 95% or more of revenue is from DJing, the entire business qualifies as non-SSTB.
