Dumpster Rental Business: LLC vs. S-Corp Tax Comparison
Dumpster rental is a capital-intensive business with recurring revenue characteristics. Each dumpster (roll-off container) generates $300-$600 per rental period (3-7 days), and a single roll-off truck can service 4-8 deliveries/pickups per day. The tax picture is dominated by equipment: a roll-off truck costs $80,000-$200,000 and each container costs $3,000-$6,000. A startup buying a truck and 10 containers invests $110,000-$260,000 before the first rental. Section 179 makes this entire investment deductible in Year 1. For tax purposes, dumpster rental is NOT a specified service trade or business (SSTB) under IRC 199A.
Dumpster rental tax structure:
SSTB status: NOT an SSTB. Full QBI deduction available at all income levels.
Capital equipment:
- Roll-off truck (hook-lift or cable): $80,000-$200,000 (new), $40,000-$100,000 (used)
- Roll-off containers (10-40 yard): $3,000-$6,000 each (new)
- A 10-container fleet: $30,000-$60,000
- All vehicles and containers qualify for Section 179 (trucks exceed 6,000 lbs GVWR)
- Total startup equipment: $110,000-$260,000
Revenue model:
- Residential dumpster rental: $300-$500 per rental (3-7 day period)
- Commercial/construction: $400-$800 per rental
- Disposal/landfill fees: $30-$80 per ton (the renter pays, but the business fronts the cost)
- A 10-container fleet rented 3x/month each: $9,000-$15,000/month revenue
- Annual revenue (10 containers): $108,000-$180,000
- Fuel is a major operating cost: roll-off trucks get 3-6 MPG
S-Corp break-even:
- Workers’ comp: 5-10% of payroll (hauling classification)
- At 7% workers’ comp: break-even around $90,000-$100,000 net income
- Many dumpster rental businesses do not reach this threshold until Year 2 or 3 because Section 179 on the truck and containers reduces Year 1 taxable income to near zero
