Electrician Business Entity Structure: LLC, S-Corp, and Tax Planning

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Electrical contracting is a skilled trade that isn’t a Specified Service Trade or Business (SSTB) under IRC 199A. This means electricians qualify for the full 20% QBI deduction at any income level, with no phase-out or income cap. Combined with the S-Corp election (which eliminates self-employment tax on distributions above reasonable salary), the tax savings for a profitable electrical contractor can be substantial.

✓Key takeaway

Electrician business tax structure:

  • SSTB status: NOT an SSTB. Electrical work is a skilled trade involving physical labor and technical expertise, not one of the enumerated service categories (health, law, accounting, consulting, financial services, performing arts, athletics, brokerage). The full 20% QBI deduction is available at any income level.

  • S-Corp threshold. The S-Corp election typically saves money when net profit consistently exceeds $50,000-$60,000. Below that, the cost of S-Corp compliance (payroll, additional tax returns, state fees) may outweigh the SE tax savings.

  • Reasonable salary for electricians. The IRS looks at comparable W-2 wages for licensed electricians in the same market. For a master electrician/owner performing electrical work and running the business:

    • Solo electrician: $55,000-$75,000 depending on market
    • Electrician with 2-5 employees: $65,000-$90,000
    • Electrical contractor with 10+ employees (primarily management): $80,000-$120,000
  • Licensing costs. Journeyman and master electrician licenses, continuing education, exam fees, bond premiums. All deductible.

  • Liability considerations. Electrical work carries significant liability (fire risk, code violations, injury). The LLC layer provides asset protection. An LLC taxed as an S-Corp provides both the liability protection and the tax benefits.

  • Apprentice and journeyman employees. Electricians with employees must run payroll, withhold taxes, and provide workers’ compensation insurance. These are deductible business expenses that reduce QBI.
