FBAR Deadline 2026: April 15, Extended to October 15

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) October 18, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

The FBAR deadline in 2026 was April 15, 2026, for the 2025 FBAR, with an automatic extension to October 15, 2026 that nobody had to request. Both dates have now passed, so a 2025 FBAR filed today is late. The next one, the 2026 FBAR, is due April 15, 2027, and extends automatically to October 15, 2027. Whether you have to file at all is covered in who needs to file an FBAR.

✓Key takeaway

April 15 is the due date and October 15 is the last day for everyone who files an FBAR, each moving to the next business day in a year it lands on a weekend or holiday. There’s no form to extend it, no June 15 date for people living abroad the way there is for the 1040, and no extension past October 15 except by FinCEN notice: disaster relief, and a recurring one for certain employees who only have signature authority over their employer’s accounts. If you missed it, file now with a short explanation of why it’s late.

When is the FBAR due in 2026?

The 2025 FBAR was due April 15, 2026, and FinCEN extended it automatically to October 15, 2026. FinCEN’s filing instructions say the FBAR “must be received by the Department of the Treasury on or before April 15th of the year immediately following the calendar year being reported,” and that filers who miss it get “an automatic extension to October 15th each year.”

None of these four dates falls on a weekend, so none moves.

Do I need to request an FBAR extension?

No. The extension to October 15 is automatic and applies to every filer. FinCEN’s 2019 due date notice explains why: the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015 moved the date to April 15 and allowed up to six months more, and “specific requests for this extension are not required.”

Two things that confuse people:

  • The 1040 extension doesn’t drive it. Filing Form 4868 extends your tax return. The FBAR’s October 15 date applies whether or not you extended anything.
  • The regulation still says June 30. The eCFR text of 31 CFR 1010.306(c) reads “on or before June 30.” The IRS’s Publication 5569 explains that June 30 was the deadline for calendar year 2015 and earlier, and that the 2015 Act changed it to April 15 starting with 2016 reports. Use April 15 and October 15.

What if the FBAR deadline falls on a weekend?

It moves to the next business day, the same as a tax return. FinCEN’s instructions say the FBAR deadline “will follow the Federal income tax due date guidance”: when the date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, a filing on the next day that isn’t one of those is on time. FinCEN applied that to the 2017 FBAR, which was due April 17, 2018 instead of April 15.

For the current cycle it doesn’t come up. April 15, 2026 was a Wednesday and October 15, 2026 a Thursday; April 15, 2027 is a Thursday and October 15, 2027 a Friday.

Is there FBAR deadline relief for disasters?

Sometimes, but only by a FinCEN notice for a specific disaster, and only for people in the areas it names. FinCEN’s notices tie the relief to the IRS: an area designated by FEMA for assistance and by the IRS for tax filing relief gets FBAR relief too, with “Deadlines for FBAR filings” the same as in the IRS designation.

The notice for Hurricane Milton, dated October 11, 2024, is a typical one: victims had until May 1, 2025 to file 2023 FBARs that would otherwise have been due October 15, 2024. FinCEN also says it will work with filers outside the area who need records located inside it.

When we checked on October 18, 2026, the most recent relief notices listed on FinCEN’s FBAR page were dated October 11, 2024: the Milton one and one for the attacks in Israel. If you were in a declared disaster area, check that page for a newer notice before treating a 2025 FBAR as late. And if you do file under a relief notice after October 15, the instructions say to pick “Other” as the late reason and identify the notice by number.

How does the FBAR deadline match the 1040 and Form 8938?

They share April 15, and October 15 if you extend the 1040. If you live and work in Canada, your 1040 gets an automatic two months to June 15 and can be extended to October 15, and Form 8938 rides along with the 1040. The FBAR doesn’t get the June date; its only extension is the automatic one to October 15.

FBAR (FinCEN Form 114)April 15, 2026October 15, 2026Automatic, nothing to file
Form 1040April 15, 2026June 15, 2026Automatic for someone living and working abroad, with a statement attached (IRS)
Form 1040, further extendedJune 15, 2026October 15, 2026Form 4868, requested by June 15 (IRS)
Form 8938With the 1040Same as the 1040Attached to the return (IRS instructions)

The October extension is to file, not to pay, and interest runs on unpaid tax from April 15 either way. Form 8938 has its own, much higher thresholds for people living abroad. The IRS’s comparison of Form 8938 and FBAR puts them at more than $200,000 on the last day of the year or $300,000 at any time for a single filer, and double that for a joint return. Form 8938 vs FBAR covers when you need both.

What if I missed the October 15 FBAR deadline?

File it as soon as you can, through BSA E-Filing like any other FBAR, and give the reason it’s late. The IRS FBAR page says that if the IRS hasn’t contacted you and you aren’t under investigation, you “should file late FBARs as soon as possible to keep potential penalties to a minimum.”

  • The form asks why. A report filed after October 15 of the following year asks you to pick a reason from a drop-down list, or choose “Other” and write an explanation. The steps are in how to file an FBAR.
  • Reasonable cause matters. Under 31 USC 5321(a)(5), no non-willful penalty is imposed if the violation was due to reasonable cause and the balance was properly reported.
  • If your tax returns were also wrong, a late FBAR on its own may not be enough. The streamlined filing compliance procedures cover six years of FBARs with three years of returns.

Which route fits your facts is in late FBARs, delinquent filing or streamlined, and the penalty amounts for each are in the FBAR penalties decision tree.
