Junk Removal Estimated Taxes: Seasonal Revenue and Quarterly Planning
Junk removal has a moderate seasonal pattern driven by spring cleaning, home moves, and renovation projects. Revenue peaks from April through September (moving season, spring/summer cleanouts, construction activity), with 55-65% of annual revenue concentrated in those six months. Winter months are slower but not dead, as estate cleanouts, foreclosure cleanouts, and commercial work continue year-round. The annualized income installment method can save some cash in Q1 but the benefit is modest (typically $500-$1,500) because the seasonal swing isn’t as extreme as exterior trades. For most junk removal operators, the prior-year safe harbor with equal quarterly payments is the simplest effective strategy.
Junk removal estimated tax planning:
Seasonality: moderate (spring/summer heavy)
- Peak: April-September (spring cleaning, moving season, construction)
- Secondary peak: January (New Year cleanouts, gym equipment purges)
- Slowest: November-February (weather, holidays, lower moving activity)
- Revenue split: 55-65% in April-September, 35-45% in October-March
- Not as extreme as exterior-only trades (no weather shutdown)
Dump fees track with revenue:
- More jobs = more dump fees (proportional)
- Dump fees as % of revenue stay constant (15-25%)
- This means profit margin is relatively stable month-to-month
- Seasonal revenue fluctuation flows proportionally to the bottom line
Year 1 truck purchase pattern:
- Truck: $45,000 (bonus depreciation)
- Often creates a Year 1 loss or near-zero profit
- Year 2: full profit taxable (no depreciation remaining)
- Prior-year safe harbor: low payments in Year 2
Growth and crew expansion:
- Adding a 2nd truck + crew: $40,000 truck + $60,000 wages
- Revenue typically doubles ($300,000+)
- Dump fees also double
- Net effect: higher profit but large new depreciation deduction in expansion year
