Locksmith Tax Deductions: Tools, Vehicle, and Transponder Equipment
Locksmith businesses have a cost structure dominated by two categories: the vehicle (getting to the job) and the specialized equipment (doing the job). Materials are a relatively small expense because key blanks, pins, and standard hardware have very high markups. A $0.50 key blank becomes a $5-$20 service. A $30 deadbolt kit becomes a $150-$250 installation. This means most of the revenue is retained as gross profit, and the tax planning centers on maximizing deductions for the vehicle, tools, and ongoing education/certification.
