Pest Control Tax Deductions: Equipment, Chemicals, Licensing, and Vehicle Expenses
Pest control businesses share a cost structure with pool service (route-based, vehicle-dependent, chemical-consuming) but with higher regulatory costs. Pesticide applicator licensing, EPA compliance, state-specific registration, and continuing education create a recurring deduction category that most trades don’t have. Chemicals and pesticides represent 8-15% of revenue (less than pool service because pesticide concentrations are much smaller per application). Vehicle expenses are the largest deduction (similar to pool service, with 10-20 stops per day). Equipment is modest: a backpack sprayer ($100-$300), a power sprayer for the truck ($2,000-$5,000), bait stations, and monitoring equipment. The recurring monthly contract model (pest control plans) provides predictable revenue and makes tax planning straightforward.
Pest control deduction categories:
Chemicals and pesticides (8-15% of revenue):
| Product Category | Monthly Cost (100 accounts) | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| General insecticide (Demand CS, Suspend, Temprid) | $200-$400 | $2,400-$4,800 |
| Termiticide (Termidor, Taurus) | $100-$300 | $1,200-$3,600 |
| Rodent bait/traps | $100-$200 | $1,200-$2,400 |
| Granular insecticide (exterior perimeter) | $50-$150 | $600-$1,800 |
| Specialty products (bed bugs, mosquitoes) | $50-$200 | $600-$2,400 |
| Bait gel (roaches, ants) | $50-$100 | $600-$1,200 |
| Total chemicals | $550-$1,350 | $6,600-$16,200 |
Chemical purchases are deductible as supplies in the year purchased. Chemicals stored in the truck/warehouse are currently deductible under the de minimis safe harbor (under $2,500 per item).
Vehicle expenses (largest deduction): Pest control techs make 10-20 stops per day, driving between accounts:
- Daily miles: 40-80
- Annual miles: 10,000-20,000
- Standard mileage deduction: $7,000-$14,000
- Most pest control trucks are over 6,000 lbs GVWR (loaded with spray rig, chemicals, equipment)
