Plumber Tax Deductions: Van, Tools, Equipment, and Material Expenses
Plumbing deductions follow a pattern similar to other licensed trades: a service van, specialty tools, and parts inventory are the core categories. What distinguishes plumbing is the range of specialty equipment: sewer cameras ($5,000-$15,000), pipe locators, press tool systems (ProPress/MegaPress), and drain machines each represent meaningful investments that are fully Section 179 eligible. Parts inventory on the van is a tax consideration: fittings, valves, water heaters, and supply lines on the van at year-end are technically inventory. The de minimis safe harbor and small business exception handle this for most plumbers. Water heaters are the highest-cost single item carried, and whether to stock them or order per-job affects both cash flow and tax timing.
