Pool Service Business Tax Deductions: Chemicals, Equipment, and Route Vehicle Costs
Pool service businesses operate on a recurring monthly contract model with route-based service delivery. The tax deduction structure reflects this: the route vehicle is the primary asset, chemicals and testing supplies are the largest recurring cost, and the monthly contract revenue creates predictable income that can be planned around effectively.
Common pool service deductions:
- Chemicals and supplies. Chlorine (liquid, tablets, granular), muriatic acid, pH adjusters, algaecides, stabilizers, diatomaceous earth, filter cartridges, O-rings, gaskets, pump baskets, skimmer baskets. These are deductible as supplies in the year purchased and used. For a route of 80 pools: approximately $4,000-$8,000/year in chemical costs.
- Route vehicle. Pickup truck or van with chemical storage (often a custom-built chemical rack). Most pool service trucks exceed 6,000 lbs GVWR and qualify for Section 179. The standard mileage rate is an alternative (70 cents/mile in 2025) but actual expenses usually produce a larger deduction for route businesses running 100+ miles/day.
- Testing and diagnostic equipment. Digital water testers ($200-$500), test kits, thermometers, TDS meters, salt level testers. Deductible as tools/equipment. Items under $2,500 each qualify for de minimis safe harbor expensing.
- Repair parts and equipment. Pool pumps, motors, heaters, salt chlorine generators, automation systems, LED lights. If you sell and install equipment, the cost of goods sold is deductible. Equipment purchased for resale is inventory (or non-incidental materials and supplies for businesses under $30M, deducted when sold).
- Insurance. General liability (covers property damage to the pool or surrounding areas), commercial auto, professional liability (for equipment installations), workers’ comp.
- Licensing and certifications. CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification, state contractor licenses, continuing education. All deductible.
- Software and technology. Route management software (Skimmer, PoolBrain, Service Autopilot), accounting software, GPS tracking, payment processing.
- Marketing. Door hangers, yard signs (“Serviced by [Company]”), Google Ads, website, referral program costs, vehicle lettering.
