Pressure Washing Estimated Taxes: Quarterly Payments and Seasonal Revenue Management
Pressure washing is one of the most seasonal service businesses. In most of the US, demand peaks from April through October and drops sharply in winter. This creates a cash flow challenge for estimated tax payments: the IRS expects four equal quarterly payments, but the business earns most of its income in two quarters. Without planning, the owner either overpays in Q1 (when cash is tight) or underpays in Q3 (when income spikes) and faces penalties.
Pressure washing estimated tax strategies:
-
Seasonal revenue profile. Most pressure washing businesses in temperate climates follow this pattern:
- Q1 (Jan-Mar): 10-15% of annual revenue (cold weather, minimal demand)
- Q2 (Apr-Jun): 30-35% (spring cleaning season, peak demand begins)
- Q3 (Jul-Sep): 30-35% (continued peak, commercial contracts)
- Q4 (Oct-Dec): 15-25% (fall cleanup, then slowdown)
-
The 30-35% set-aside. From every job payment, transfer 30-35% to a dedicated tax savings account. This covers both SE tax (15.3%) and income tax (12-24% bracket for most pressure washing incomes, applied to taxable income after deductions). The set-aside rate should be higher (35%) in the early years before equipment deductions reduce taxable income, and lower (25-30%) in years with large Section 179 deductions.
-
Year-one exception. New businesses with no prior-year return have a $0 prior-year tax liability, which means the prior-year safe harbor is $0 (100% of $0). This does NOT mean no estimated payments are required. The 90% current-year rule still applies. A new business that earns $100,000 and pays $0 in estimated taxes will face an underpayment penalty on approximately $15,000 in tax liability.
-
Equipment purchase timing for tax management. A $40,000 truck purchased in Q4 and expensed via Section 179 can eliminate or dramatically reduce Q4 estimated tax payment. Plan major equipment purchases in the quarter where the deduction offsets the highest marginal income.
