Roofing Estimated Taxes: Storm Season Spikes and Quarterly Payments
Roofing estimated taxes have two layers of unpredictability. The first is normal seasonality: most residential roofing revenue falls between April and November, with a 2-3x peak-to-trough ratio in northern markets and nearly flat in southern markets. The second (and more impactful) is storm damage work. A single major hailstorm or hurricane can generate $100,000-$500,000 in additional revenue within 2-4 weeks, creating a massive income spike in one quarter. Insurance restoration work often closes and pays in a different quarter from when it’s performed, adding a timing dimension to tax planning. The thin margins (10-20% net) mean that the estimated tax payments are relatively modest as a percentage of revenue, but the absolute dollars matter because cash flow is tight.
Roofing seasonal pattern (northern market, no storm events):
| Month | Revenue | % of Annual |
|---|---|---|
| January | $10,000 | 3% |
| February | $10,000 | 3% |
| March | $20,000 | 5% |
| April | $40,000 | 10% |
| May | $50,000 | 12% |
| June | $55,000 | 13% |
| July | $55,000 | 13% |
| August | $50,000 | 12% |
| September | $45,000 | 11% |
| October | $35,000 | 8% |
| November | $20,000 | 5% |
| December | $10,000 | 3% |
| Total | $400,000 | 100% |
Winter revenue comes from emergency repairs, commercial maintenance, and interior work.
Storm damage wildcard: A single hailstorm in June could add:
- 20 insurance claims at $12,000 average = $240,000
- Spread across June through September (install timeline)
- This nearly doubles revenue for the year
- At 15% net margin: $36,000 in additional profit
- Additional estimated tax: $36,000 x 25% = $9,000
Set-aside percentage: 3-5% of gross revenue (because margins are thin)
- Or 20-25% of net profit per completed job
- The gross revenue method is simpler for roofing because materials, labor, and overhead eat most of the revenue
