IRS Power of Attorney (Form 2848): How to Authorize Your CPA to Represent You Before the IRS
Form 2848 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative) is the IRS document that authorizes a tax professional (CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney) to act on your behalf before the IRS. This includes receiving confidential tax information, responding to IRS notices, attending examinations, negotiating payment plans, signing agreements, and filing appeals. Without a Form 2848 on file, the IRS will not discuss your tax matters with anyone, including your CPA. The authorization is specific: it covers only the tax forms, tax years, and representative named on the form. A separate Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) allows a representative to receive your tax information but not act on your behalf. For most business owners, filing a Form 2848 with their CPA at the start of the engagement is best practice, as it allows the CPA to handle any IRS communications without requiring the business owner’s direct involvement.
