Tax Planning for a High-Income Year: Strategies to Reduce a Windfall Tax Bill

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

A high-income year creates both a tax problem and a tax planning opportunity. The progressive tax system means that income at the margin is taxed at higher rates, so reducing income from the 37% bracket to the 32% bracket saves 5 cents on every dollar shifted. The key principle is to accelerate deductions INTO the high-income year and defer income OUT of it. For business owners, the most impactful strategies involve maximizing retirement plan contributions (which reduce AGI), purchasing equipment to claim Section 179 and bonus depreciation, prepaying deductible expenses under the 12-month rule, and donating appreciated stock to charity (avoiding capital gains while getting a full FMV deduction). These strategies work best when implemented before year-end (many have December 31 deadlines), which is why October through December is prime tax planning season.
