Tax Planning for Pet Grooming, Boarding Kennels, and Dog Daycare: Facility Depreciation, Service Revenue, and Entity Structure
Pet care businesses occupy a favorable tax position because they provide physical services and facility access (not professional advice), which means they are classified as non-SSTBs under IRC 199A and qualify for the full 20% QBI deduction regardless of the owner’s income level. This is a meaningful distinction from veterinary practices (which are SSTBs under the “health care” category), because a pet grooming or boarding business with the same net income as a veterinary practice gets the QBI deduction while the vet practice doesn’t. The facility-intensive nature of boarding and daycare businesses (kennels, outdoor play areas, HVAC for climate control, plumbing for wash stations, soundproofing) creates significant Year 1 depreciation deductions through Qualified Improvement Property (QIP) treatment and 100% bonus depreciation on the interior buildout.

How should pet care business owners minimize taxes?
Do I need to collect sales tax on my services?
Whether services are subject to sales tax depends entirely on the state where the service is performed or delivered. Most states exempt professional services (accounting, legal, consulting) from sales tax, but a growing number tax specific services like repair and maintenance, landscaping, and personal care services. Some states tax all services unless specifically exempted, while others exempt all services unless specifically listed as taxable. If you operate in multiple states, you need to check each state’s rules because a service taxable in one state may be exempt in another. Failing to collect and remit required sales tax creates a personal liability for the business owner, and states can audit back several years with penalties and interest.
