Tax Planning for Photography and Videography Businesses: Equipment Depreciation, Copyright Income, and Creative Business Deductions

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Photography and videography businesses occupy a favorable tax position because they produce tangible creative work products (images, video content, edited deliverables) rather than providing advice or counsel, which means they are generally classified as non-SSTBs under IRC 199A and qualify for the full 20% QBI deduction at all income levels. The business is also equipment-intensive relative to revenue: a working photographer may carry $50,000-$150,000 in camera bodies, lenses, lighting, computers, and accessories, all of which qualify for Section 179 or 100% bonus depreciation. The combination of equipment depreciation, the QBI deduction, and S-Corp payroll tax optimization creates a three-layer tax savings stack that can reduce the effective tax rate by 10-15 percentage points compared to a sole proprietor with no tax planning.

How should photographers and videographers minimize taxes?

Which photography business costs deserve a second look?

A home studio or editing room needs exclusive and regular business use plus one more test: it’s your principal place of business, a place you meet clients, or a separate structure. A detached garage or backyard studio used only for the business can qualify on that last test even if clients never visit.

  • Lenses, lights and other gear costing $2,500 or less per item or invoice can be expensed under the de minimis safe harbor, as an option alongside Section 179, if you make the annual election and your books expense them.
  • Editing software you buy off the shelf qualifies for Section 179. Otherwise it’s depreciated over 36 months.
  • Driving between shoots, venues and other business stops is business mileage at 70 cents a mile for 2025, then 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, 2026. Keep a record as you go.
Want this checked against your own situation?

Start with a Diagnostic: a CPA licensed in the US and Canada reads your file and tells you in writing what's wrong and how to fix it, three to four business days after you finish the questions. The report is $250. If you hire us for any work after that, you get the $250 back as a discount on that work. Or send us your return or your letter and get a fixed price, free.
