Tattoo Studio Deductions: Ink, Needles, Equipment, and Studio Buildout Costs

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Tattoo studios have a specific cost structure that creates meaningful deductions when tracked properly. Single-use supplies (needles, ink cups, gloves, barrier film) are consumed per client and are deducted as ordinary business expenses or cost of goods sold. Equipment (tattoo machines, autoclaves, power supplies) has a longer useful life and can be expensed immediately through Section 179 or bonus depreciation.

✓Key takeaway

Major deduction categories for tattoo studios:

Supplies (deducted as incurred):

  • Tattoo needles and cartridges
  • Ink (all colors)
  • Ink cups, rinse cups, spray bottles
  • Disposable gloves (nitrile)
  • Barrier film, clip cord covers, machine bags
  • Stencil paper, thermal transfer paper
  • Aftercare products provided to clients
  • Cleaning supplies, disinfectants, surface sanitizer
  • Paper towels, dental bibs

Equipment (Section 179 or depreciation):

  • Tattoo machines (coil and rotary): $200-$2,000 each
  • Power supplies: $100-$500
  • Autoclave (sterilization): $1,000-$5,000
  • Ultrasonic cleaner: $200-$500
  • Tattoo chairs/beds: $500-$3,000
  • Workstation furniture: $200-$1,000
  • iPad/tablet for digital design: $500-$1,500
  • Laser removal equipment: $50,000-$200,000

Studio buildout (qualified improvement property):

  • Interior walls, lighting, flooring
  • Plumbing for wash stations
  • HVAC modifications (ventilation is critical for ink fumes)
  • Electrical upgrades for equipment
  • 15-year recovery period, eligible for 100% bonus depreciation

Other deductible expenses:

  • Health department licensing and inspection fees
  • Bloodborne pathogen training (OSHA requirement)
  • Professional liability insurance
  • Music licensing (BMI/ASCAP/SESAC)
  • Portfolio hosting (website, Instagram promotion)
  • Convention attendance and booth fees
  • Continuing education (tattoo workshops, art classes)

How does the de minimis safe harbor help equipment buys?

What records do I need to keep to substantiate my tax deductions?

The IRS requires records that show the amount, date, place, and business purpose of each expense. For expenses under $75, a log entry or digital note is sufficient; for $75 and above, you need a receipt. Bank and credit card statements alone are not sufficient documentation because they show the amount and vendor but not the business purpose. For meals, you must record who was present and the business topic discussed, in addition to the receipt. For vehicle expenses, a contemporaneous mileage log is required (paper or digital app), recording the date, destination, business purpose, and odometer readings. The IRS can disallow deductions entirely if you cannot produce records during an audit, even if the expenses were legitimate.
