Tow Truck Tax Deductions: Equipment, Fuel, and Storage Yard Expenses
The tow truck business has the highest equipment costs of any single-operator trade. A single tow truck costs $40,000-$150,000 for light and medium-duty, and $300,000-$800,000 for heavy-duty rotators. Every tow truck is well over 6,000 lbs GVWR (most are 10,000-33,000 lbs), which means no IRC 280F luxury auto limitations and no $30,500 SUV cap on Section 179. The full purchase price qualifies for bonus depreciation in Year 1. After the truck, fuel is the dominant ongoing expense (10-20% of revenue), followed by insurance (towing-specific liability insurance is among the most expensive in any trade). Storage yard costs, if the operator runs an impound lot, add another significant deduction category.
Tow truck business deductions:
Tow trucks (the defining asset):
- Light-duty wheel-lift: $40,000-$60,000
- Light-duty wrecker (boom): $50,000-$80,000
- Flatbed/rollback: $50,000-$100,000
- Medium-duty wrecker: $80,000-$150,000
- Heavy-duty wrecker: $150,000-$400,000
- Rotator (heavy recovery): $300,000-$800,000
- All over 6,000 lbs GVWR: full bonus depreciation, no IRC 280F limits
- Tow truck equipment (winch, boom, wheel-lift mechanism): included in truck cost or separately depreciable
- Auxiliary lighting, strobes, LED bars: depreciable or expensed
Fuel (largest ongoing expense):
- A tow truck gets 6-12 mpg (diesel or gas)
- Average operator: 30,000-50,000 miles/year
- At 8 mpg and $3.50/gallon: 40,000 miles / 8 mpg = 5,000 gallons x $3.50 = $17,500/year
- Heavy-duty trucks: even worse fuel economy (4-8 mpg)
- Fuel is deductible under actual expense method (required if claiming bonus depreciation on the truck)
- Can’t use standard mileage if the truck claims depreciation
Insurance (uniquely expensive for towing):
- General liability: $2,000-$5,000/year
- Garage keeper’s liability (covers stored vehicles): $2,000-$5,000/year
- On-hook/towing liability: $3,000-$8,000/year
- Commercial auto (per truck): $3,000-$8,000/year
- Workers’ comp (if employees): varies, towing is high-risk
- Cargo coverage: $500-$2,000/year
- Total insurance: $10,000-$30,000/year (one of the highest among trades)
- All premiums fully deductible
Storage yard expenses (if operating an impound lot):
- Land lease or mortgage interest: deductible
- Fencing, security cameras, lighting: 15-year MACRS (land improvements), bonus eligible
- Paving/grading: 15-year MACRS
- Office/booth at the yard: depreciable structure
- Security guard or monitoring service: deductible
- Signage (legal requirements for impound lots): deductible
- Storage lot revenue is nearly pure profit (minimal variable costs)
Maintenance and repair (significant for heavy equipment):
- Tires (6+ tires per truck): $1,500-$5,000/year
- Brakes: $1,000-$3,000/year
- Hydraulic system service: $500-$2,000/year
- Winch cable/chain replacement: $200-$800/year
- Body repair (trucks get damaged): $1,000-$5,000/year
- Oil changes, fluid service: $1,000-$2,000/year
- Total maintenance: $5,000-$15,000/year per truck
- All deductible as repairs (not capitalized unless it extends the truck’s useful life)
Licensing and permits:
- Towing license: varies by jurisdiction ($100-$2,000/year)
- Impound lot license: $200-$1,000/year
- DOT number (if operating interstate or over certain weight): $0 (registration is free, but compliance costs money)
- CDL (if required for heavy-duty): $100-$300 (testing fee, deductible)
- Annual vehicle inspection: $100-$300 per truck
Communications and dispatch:
- Two-way radio/dispatch system: $500-$2,000/year
- Cell phone (business use): deductible
- GPS/fleet tracking: $20-$50/month per truck
- Dispatch software: $50-$200/month
