Boat Detailing Business: LLC vs. S-Corp Tax Structure
Boat detailing is a mobile service business that isn’t classified as a specified service trade or business (SSTB) under IRC 199A. Detailing involves physical cleaning, polishing, waxing, and protecting boat surfaces, which is a hands-on trade, not professional advisory work. The full 20% QBI deduction applies at all income levels. The business is characterized by high margins (materials cost 5-15% of the service price), strong seasonality (60-70% of revenue in April through September), and relatively low equipment costs compared to other trades.
Boat detailing entity structure:
SSTB classification: NOT an SSTB. Boat detailing is physical cleaning and surface treatment. Not consulting, health care, financial services, or any enumerated SSTB category.
Sole proprietor / single-member LLC:
- All net profit on Schedule C
- SE tax (15.3%) on all net profit
- QBI deduction: 20% of qualified business income
- No payroll needed
- Best for detailers under $55,000 in net profit
S-Corp:
- Owner salary via W-2 ($30,000-$45,000 for a solo detailer)
- Remaining profit as K-1 distributions (no SE tax)
- S-Corp break-even: $55,000-$65,000 in net profit
- Payroll + return costs: $1,700-$3,500/year
Revenue model:
- Wash and wax (25-30 ft boat): $300-$600
- Full detail (compound, polish, wax): $800-$2,500
- Bottom paint: $1,000-$3,000 (if offered)
- Ceramic coating: $1,500-$5,000
- Winterization detailing: $400-$800
- Typical solo operator: 4-6 boats per week during peak season, 1-2 per week off-season
- Annual revenue: $60,000-$200,000 depending on market and services
Margins:
- Materials (soap, compound, wax, ceramic coating): 5-15% of service price
- Marine ceramic coating: higher material cost (10-15%) but premium pricing covers it
- Labor is the primary input (your time)
- Gross margins: 65-80%
Seasonality impact on entity structure:
- Revenue peaks April-September (boating season)
- Off-season income: winterization, indoor storage facility detailing, auto detailing cross-over
- The seasonal nature doesn’t change the S-Corp decision, but it does affect estimated tax payment planning
- With S-Corp: W-2 salary is paid year-round (even in slow months), smoothing the tax withholding
When should a boat detailer elect S-Corp?
