Mobile Auto Detailing Business: LLC vs. S-Corp Tax Structure
Mobile auto detailing is NOT classified as a specified service trade or business (SSTB) under IRC 199A. Washing, polishing, coating, and restoring vehicle surfaces is physical labor, not consulting, financial services, or any enumerated SSTB category. The full 20% QBI deduction is available at all income levels. Mobile auto detailing has excellent margins (65-80% for a solo operator) because material costs are low (5-12% of revenue), equipment needs are moderate ($5,000-$15,000 for a professional setup), and the business can be operated from home with a vehicle-based mobile rig. The addition of ceramic coating services significantly increases average ticket size and margins.
