Cabinet Installation Business Estimated Taxes: Quarterly Payment Guide

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Cabinet businesses follow the home renovation cycle. Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) are peak seasons, as homeowners plan and execute kitchen and bathroom remodels. Summer can be strong in markets where families renovate while on vacation. Winter is typically the slowest period (except for new construction, which runs year-round in warm climates). The key estimated tax planning consideration is the difference between installation-only and fabrication models: installation-only businesses have lower margins and more predictable costs, while fabrication shops have higher margins but more variable costs (material waste, project scope changes, finishing costs).

✓Key takeaway

Estimated tax planning for cabinet businesses:

  • Installation-only set-aside rate: 20-25% of net profit (lower margins mean less taxable income per dollar of revenue)
  • Fabrication shop set-aside rate: 22-28% of net profit (higher margins generate more taxable income)
  • Revenue pattern: peaks in spring and fall, aligned with renovation cycles
  • New construction caveat: builders provide year-round work but typically at lower margins (15-25% vs. 30-50% for direct-to-homeowner)
  • Quarterly due dates: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15
  • Safe harbor: 100% of prior year tax (110% if AGI > $150,000)

How do you estimate taxes when margins vary by job type?

What strategies can reduce my self-employment tax burden?

The most effective strategy is electing S-Corp taxation, which allows you to pay FICA only on a reasonable salary rather than on all net self-employment income. Maximizing business deductions on Schedule C (home office, vehicle) reduces net self-employment income, which directly reduces the SE tax base. The self-employed health insurance deduction and retirement contributions for yourself reduce income tax but not SE tax. Hiring your spouse and paying them a reasonable wage shifts some income to the employer side of FICA (which you still pay) but can enable benefits like a larger retirement plan contribution through the spouse’s employment. If you have both W-2 employment and self-employment income, your W-2 wages count toward the Social Security wage base ($168,600 in 2024), so self-employment income above the remaining cap is subject only to the 2.9% Medicare portion. Income splitting through a family partnership can also reduce the overall SE tax if the partnership interests are genuine and the family members provide real services or capital.
