Estimated Tax Payments for Flooring Installers
Flooring installers who operate as sole proprietors or single-member LLCs must make quarterly estimated tax payments when the expected tax liability exceeds $1,000 for the year. The set-aside percentage differs significantly between labor-only and materials-included businesses because the profit margin on materials-included work is much lower as a percentage of gross revenue.
Estimated tax approach by business model:
Labor-only flooring installer:
- Revenue is mostly profit (no material costs)
- Typical profit margin: 70-80% of revenue
- Set-aside recommendation: 25-30% of gross revenue
- At $90,000 revenue: set aside $22,500-$27,000
- Actual tax at $73,000 net profit: approximately $14,900
- The buffer covers quarterly variations
Materials-included flooring installer:
- Revenue includes materials at cost + markup
- Typical profit margin: 35-45% of revenue
- Set-aside recommendation: 12-15% of gross revenue (because materials consume 50%+ of each payment)
- At $180,000 revenue: set aside $21,600-$27,000
- Actual tax at $69,000 net profit: approximately $13,800
- Important: don’t set aside 25-30% of gross revenue on a materials-included business, or $45,000-$54,000 would be tied up in the tax account, creating cash flow problems
S-Corp owners (either model):
- W-2 withholding handles the tax payments automatically
- Set the W-4 to withhold enough to cover the total annual tax
- No separate estimated payments needed
- Withholding is treated as paid evenly throughout the year (no underpayment penalty for uneven income)
