Fence Installation Business Estimated Taxes: Seasonal Payment Guide
Fence installation has a moderate seasonal pattern. Spring and fall are peak seasons (ground is workable, weather is mild, homeowners are improving outdoor spaces). Summer stays busy but heat can slow production. Winter is the low season in northern states (frozen ground makes post holes difficult), though southern states work year-round. The seasonal pattern is less extreme than concrete work because fence installation can proceed in cooler temperatures as long as the ground isn’t frozen.
Estimated tax overview for fence installers:
Seasonal revenue pattern (northern states):
- Q1 (Jan-Mar): 12-18% of annual revenue (mostly March)
- Q2 (Apr-Jun): 30-35% (spring peak, highest booking volume)
- Q3 (Jul-Sep): 28-32% (steady through summer)
- Q4 (Oct-Dec): 18-25% (fall push before freeze, then slowdown)
Southern states: more even distribution (20-30% per quarter)
Payment approaches:
- Prior year safe harbor: pay 100% of last year’s tax divided by 4 (110% if AGI over $150,000). Known number, no calculation needed. Best for Year 2+ operators.
- Set-aside method: deposit 22-25% of each week’s net profit (revenue minus materials and labor) into a tax savings account. Pay from that account quarterly. This naturally adjusts for seasonal variation.
- Annualized income installment method: for operators with a pronounced seasonal swing. Aligns payments with income but requires more bookkeeping.
First-year operators: No prior year return means no safe harbor. Use the current-year 90% method:
- Estimate annual net profit
- Calculate SE tax + income tax
- Divide by 4
- Adjust quarterly if income deviates from the estimate
