Garage Door Repair Business Estimated Taxes: Quarterly Payment Guide

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Garage door repair is one of the more predictable service trades for estimated tax purposes. Spring breaks, opener failures, and off-track doors happen year-round. There is a mild seasonal uptick in spring (garage sales, spring cleaning, people noticing problems) and fall (winterizing), but emergency repairs are the core revenue driver and those follow no calendar. This stability makes equal quarterly payments a reasonable approach.

✓Key takeaway

Estimated tax basics for garage door repair:

Why you owe quarterly:

  • Sole proprietors and single-member LLC owners have no employer withholding taxes from their income
  • The IRS requires pay-as-you-go: if you’ll owe $1,000+ at filing, you must make quarterly estimated payments
  • Underpayment penalty: approximately 8% annualized (2024-2025 rate) on the shortfall, calculated per quarter
  • Due dates: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15

Safe harbor methods (avoid the underpayment penalty):

  1. Prior year safe harbor: pay 100% of last year’s total tax liability, divided into 4 equal payments (110% if AGI exceeded $150,000). This is the simplest method because you know the number on April 15 and it doesn’t change.
  2. Current year method: pay 90% of this year’s actual tax liability. Requires estimating income accurately, which is harder.
  3. Annualized income installment method (Form 2210, Schedule AI): calculates each quarter’s payment based on income actually earned through that quarter. Useful if income is genuinely uneven. Rarely needed for garage door repair (demand is stable).

The S-Corp alternative: An S-Corp owner pays a W-2 salary to themselves. Federal and state income taxes are withheld from each paycheck, just like any employee. This eliminates the need for estimated tax payments on the salary portion. Only the K-1 distribution (profit above salary) requires estimated payments, and if the salary withholding is set high enough, even that is covered.
