How Much Does a Fractional CFO Cost?
A fractional CFO costs $1,750 to $6,500 a month at the prices firms actually publish, which works out to $21,000 to $78,000 a year. A full-time CFO costs several times that: the Robert Half 2026 Salary Guide puts the national midpoint base salary at $269,750, with a range of $195,500 to $321,750 before bonus, benefits, and payroll taxes. Few fractional providers post their prices, and vendor estimates of the market run wider, around $3,000 to $12,000 a month and $175 to $450 an hour. What you pay depends mostly on how often you meet, how much modeling and reporting is produced between meetings, and whether your books are clean enough to build on.
Published fractional CFO prices, September 2026. Pilot: from $1,750 a month with a monthly call, $3,150 with biweekly calls, and $5,250 with weekly calls, all billed annually. Blue Cloud CPA: from $1,750 a month for a monthly strategy session with a rolling 13-week cash forecast, $3,500 for biweekly calls with budgeting and board-level reporting, and $6,500 for weekly involvement with fundraising and lender packages. One-time options run $695 for a single strategy session and $995 for a 13-week cash forecast build. A full-time CFO’s base salary runs $195,500 to $321,750 (Robert Half 2026), so a fractional engagement costs roughly 8% to 30% of the midpoint base salary. Clean, current books are a prerequisite at every price.
What do fractional CFOs charge per month?
From $1,750 a month for a monthly strategy session to $5,250 to $6,500 a month for weekly involvement, going by the prices firms publish. Monthly retainers are the norm in this market, and the published ones cluster into three tiers by how often you meet and how much modeling gets built between meetings.
| Tier | Cadence | Published price | Typical deliverables |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Monthly call | Pilot from $1,750. Blue Cloud CPA from $1,750 | Monthly financial review, KPI dashboard, rolling cash forecast |
| Mid | Biweekly calls | Pilot from $3,150. Blue Cloud CPA from $3,500 | Adds annual budget with variance reporting, three-statement model, scenario planning, board or owner pack |
| Full | Weekly calls | Pilot from $5,250. Blue Cloud CPA from $6,500 | Adds fundraising and lender packages, capital strategy, exit readiness |
| Quarterly light | One session a quarter | Blue Cloud CPA from $495 | Quarterly strategy session and a refreshed forecast |
Pilot’s prices are billed annually. Ours run month to month after a three-month minimum. Most firms in this market quote privately, so the published prices are a small sample. One vendor’s market estimate, from Graphite Financial, puts the range at $3,000 to $12,000 a month.
What do fractional CFOs charge per hour?
Graphite’s estimate is $175 to $450 an hour. Our published rate for ad hoc strategic work outside a retainer is $395 an hour. We haven’t found an independent survey of fractional CFO rates, so treat any precise “average” you see quoted as one firm’s opinion.
Hourly works for a defined project: a lender package, a pricing analysis, a model for a specific decision. For ongoing work it’s the wrong structure. It punishes the owner for calling, which is the opposite of what a CFO is for, and it makes the monthly cost unpredictable.
How does that compare with a full-time CFO?
The Robert Half 2026 Salary Guide lists CFO base salaries of $195,500 at the low end, $269,750 at the midpoint, and $321,750 at the high end, nationally. Add the employer’s payroll taxes, health insurance, retirement contributions, bonus, and usually equity, and at even 25% on top of base pay, the loaded cost of a midpoint hire passes $330,000.
| Annual cost | What you get | |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time CFO, midpoint base salary | $269,750 before bonus, benefits, and taxes | 40 to 50 hours a week |
| Fractional, full tier | $63,000 to $78,000 | Weekly involvement |
| Fractional, mid tier | $37,800 to $42,000 | Biweekly involvement |
| Fractional, entry tier | $21,000 | Monthly involvement |
A company with $3 million in revenue doesn’t have 40 hours a week of CFO-level work. It has a few hours a month of decisions that are worth a great deal to get right: pricing, hiring ahead of revenue, a credit line, an acquisition offer, a second location. The fractional model prices those hours without the other 150.
What’s included, and what isn’t?
A fractional CFO works from the books. They don’t keep them. The engagement assumes monthly financial statements that are accurate and on time, and if the books aren’t there yet, bookkeeping or a cleanup comes first. The bookkeeping cost guide covers that layer, which runs $350 to $1,000 a month for most small businesses.
Tax returns are also separate, though a CFO who works alongside the tax preparer, or in the same firm, will catch things like an S corporation salary that’s out of line or an equipment purchase that should land before year end. Audit support, a business valuation, a sell-side due diligence package, and system implementations are normally scoped as projects on top of the retainer. Our published project prices run $2,500 for a profitability analysis, $3,500 for a business valuation, and $5,000 to $10,000 for exit planning.
When is a fractional CFO worth the money?
When the decisions are bigger than the fee. A $1,750 retainer is $21,000 a year. A business that raises prices 3% on $2 million of revenue because someone finally built the margin analysis by product line has covered it almost three times over. So has one that avoids a bad lease or a bad hire, or gets a credit line in place before the slow season.
It’s too early when revenue is under about $500,000 and the books aren’t yet monthly. At that stage a quarterly session or a one-time engagement does more per dollar. A single working session with a written action plan is $695 at our firm, and a 13-week cash forecast built on your numbers, with a KPI baseline and a 90-day roadmap, is $995 and credits toward the first month of a retainer.
What should I do next?
Write down the two or three decisions in the next 12 months where you’d want a second set of eyes with a finance background, and what each one is worth if it goes right or wrong. If the total is comfortably more than $21,000, a retainer is easy to justify. If it isn’t, start with a one-time session.
