Landscaping Estimated Taxes: Seasonal Income and Quarterly Payments
Landscaping follows the inverse seasonal pattern of snow removal: revenue peaks from April through October and drops to near-zero in winter (in northern markets). The peak-to-trough ratio is typically 3-5x in four-season climates, making the annualized income installment method valuable for cash flow management. Southern and year-round markets (Florida, Texas, Southern California) have much milder seasonality (1.5-2x ratio) because grass grows year-round. Many landscapers pair with snow removal in winter, which inverts the challenge: instead of zero-income months, you have year-round revenue but need to track two distinct business activities for accurate quarterly estimated taxes.
Seasonal revenue pattern (northern market, lawn care only):
| Month | Revenue | % of Annual |
|---|---|---|
| January | $0 | 0% |
| February | $0 | 0% |
| March | $2,000 | 2% |
| April | $10,000 | 11% |
| May | $13,000 | 14% |
| June | $13,000 | 14% |
| July | $12,000 | 13% |
| August | $11,000 | 12% |
| September | $10,000 | 11% |
| October | $9,000 | 10% |
| November | $8,000 | 9% |
| December | $2,000 | 2% |
| Total | $90,000 | 100% |
November stays elevated because of fall cleanups and leaf removal. March has early-season cleanups and mulch pre-orders.
Peak-to-trough ratio: infinite (January = $0, June = $13,000) Adjusted ratio (March to June): 6.5x
Southern market (FL/TX) pattern:
- Mowing year-round (12 months vs. 7-8 months)
- Summer is actually lower (heat slows growth in deep south)
- Peak-to-trough: 1.5-2x
- Estimated tax planning is simpler because income is more even
Set-aside percentage: 20-25% of net profit
- Higher for sole props (self-employment tax adds ~15%)
- Lower for S-Corp owners (only on salary, not distributions)
