Snow Removal Estimated Taxes: Extreme Seasonality and Quarterly Payments
Snow removal is the most seasonal trade business for tax purposes. Unlike tree service (which has some summer revenue) or landscaping (which inverts the snow calendar), a pure snow removal operation produces 85-95% of its annual revenue in a 4-5 month window. This creates a unique estimated tax challenge: the standard equal quarterly payment method forces you to send the IRS $5,000-$6,000 in July when you earned nothing. The annualized income installment method (IRC 6654(d)(2)) solves this by computing each quarter’s required payment based on actual year-to-date income, matching your tax payments to when you actually earn the money. This method requires filing Form 2210 Schedule AI with your return.
Why snow removal estimated taxes are different:
The seasonal concentration problem:
| Quarter | Months | Revenue (pure snow) | % of Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 (Jan-Mar) | Peak season | $55,000 | 55% |
| Q2 (Apr-Jun) | Off-season | $0 | 0% |
| Q3 (Jul-Sep) | Off-season | $0 | 0% |
| Q4 (Oct-Dec) | Early/peak season | $45,000 | 45% |
Equal quarterly payments vs. annualized: If total tax is $20,000:
- Equal: $5,000 per quarter (Q2 and Q3 payments made from savings, not from income)
- Annualized: $11,000 Q1, $0 Q2, $0 Q3, $9,000 Q4 (payments match when money comes in)
Cash flow difference: $10,000 stays in your account through summer. That’s $10,000 you can use for summer equipment maintenance, off-season projects, or simply to cover living expenses during zero-income months.
Annualized method requirements:
- File Form 2210 Schedule AI with your annual return
- Track actual income and expenses by quarter
- Compute the annualized tax for each quarter separately
- Keep records supporting the quarterly breakdown
- A CPA or tax software handles the calculation; the key is tracking quarterly numbers
