Moving from Calgary to Miami: Taxes, Energy Finance, and Alberta's Cleanest Exit

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) August 31, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Two groups make this move often enough that it’s a recognizable pattern rather than a one-off: oil and gas executives and engineers winding down a Calgary career and heading somewhere warm, and energy-finance professionals chasing Miami’s growing private equity and family-office scene. Both arrive with the same starting advantage. Alberta already runs the lowest provincial tax rate in Canada, so the corridor’s departure math is cleaner than almost any other Canadian city moving to Florida.

Key takeaway

Alberta’s combined federal and provincial top rate sits near 48%, the lightest of any province. Florida has no state income tax at all, so the destination side of the math is federal-only, roughly 37% at the top. The rate drop is real, but Alberta’s head start means the gap here is smaller than a Toronto or Vancouver corridor into the same city. The bigger planning items are the departure tax on the way out and a sales and property tax structure in Florida that shifts the bill rather than erasing it.

What happens to your tax bill when you move to Miami?

Two things happen on two different timelines. Going forward, Alberta’s provincial tax and the federal Canadian layer stop applying once you’re genuinely non-resident, and Florida adds nothing state-side to replace it, no income tax, no county add-on. On the way out, Canada treats you as having sold most of what you own at fair market value on your departure date, and that deemed disposition is taxed in your final Canadian year regardless of where you land. The going-forward savings are real and permanent; the one-time departure bill is the part people underestimate.

How much of Alberta’s 48% top rate actually disappears?

All of the provincial share, and it was already the smallest provincial share in the country. Alberta runs a flat 10% rising to 15% at the top, no surtax, no health premium stacked on top the way some provinces layer one in. Once you’re a Florida resident with no Alberta ties, that 15% top slice is gone, and nothing in Florida replaces it. What doesn’t disappear is US federal tax on worldwide income once you’re a US tax resident, so the honest comparison is Alberta-plus-federal-Canadian against US-federal-only, not 48% against zero.

  • Because Alberta’s rate was already low, the dollar swing here is smaller than the same trip from Ontario or BC into the same city.

Why does Calgary’s energy and finance talent go to Miami?

Retirement and career pivot, mostly. Oil and gas executives and senior engineers who built wealth through a Calgary energy career often want warm weather, no state tax, and proximity to Latin American and Caribbean travel, and Miami checks all three. A newer wave comes from energy finance: analysts and portfolio managers who priced Canadian oil and gas assets in Calgary now working the same skill set into Miami’s expanding private equity and family-office corridor, a market that’s grown quickly enough to pull talent from finance hubs across North America.

What happens on the Alberta side when you leave?

The standard departure sequence runs regardless of destination. Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage doesn’t end the day you land in Florida, it typically runs about three months past your departure before you need Florida or private coverage in place. The deemed disposition captures non-registered investments and most property at fair market value, with the usual carve-outs for Canadian real estate and registered plans, reported on the final T1 for your departure year.

  • Because Alberta’s rate on that gain is the lowest in Canada, energy executives with sizable unrealized stock and brokerage gains get the cheapest provincial exit tax available on the same portfolio, versus a Toronto or Vancouver departure.

Why does Miami-Dade sales tax go up, not down?

Because Alberta doesn’t charge a provincial sales tax at all, just the 5% federal GST, the lowest consumption tax load in the country. Miami-Dade runs a combined 7% (6% state plus a 1% county surtax), so this is one of the few line items in the corridor that moves the wrong way. It’s a small number against the income tax savings, but it’s worth naming since every other Alberta corridor into a sales-tax state has the same feature and it surprises people who expect Florida to be cheaper across the board.

How do the homestead exemption and Save Our Homes work?

Two mechanisms, and the year-one gap between them is the detail most people miss. Make a home your genuine permanent residence by January 1 and file Form DR-501 with the county property appraiser by March 1, and you get up to $50,000 off assessed value. Save Our Homes is separate: once you’ve had one exempt year on the roll, annual assessed-value increases are capped at the lower of 3% or CPI, a sharp contrast with Calgary’s roughly 0.6% to 0.8% property tax rate that carries no similar cap.

  • That 3% cap doesn’t apply in year one; it’s taxed at full assessed value, and the protection only builds starting the second year.

What happens to your RRSP and TFSA in Florida?

This is the cleanest RRSP math in the whole state-by-state set, because Florida has no state income tax and therefore no state return to file at all. RRSP withdrawals stay ordinary federal income with the treaty’s 15% withholding available as a foreign tax credit, and there’s no state addback risk the way there is in California or New York. The TFSA carries the same US reporting exposure regardless of destination, Form 3520/3520-A filings and PFIC treatment on any fund holdings inside it, since the IRS doesn’t recognize the TFSA’s Canadian tax-free status.

What happens to AHCIP when you leave Alberta?

Coverage runs on a tail, not a cliff. AHCIP typically continues for about three months after your departure date is filed with the province, which gives most people a workable window to arrange US coverage rather than a gap. That window needs to be planned around the actual move date, not assumed, since a delayed departure filing can shrink it.

Are you already a snowbird turning permanent?

Often, yes, especially among the finance professionals in this corridor who’ve kept a Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton property for years before making Florida the primary residence. The substantial presence test counts the current year’s days in full, a third of the prior year, and a sixth of the year before that, and a multi-year pattern of extended winters can clear 183 days before anyone treats the move as official. The closer-connection exception on Form 8840 can help, but it has to be filed on time and it has its own day-count ceiling.

Is there an estate tax to worry about in Florida?

Not a state one. Florida has no separate state estate tax, unlike the Alberta estate administration costs that apply on the Canadian side. US federal estate tax still applies above the exemption threshold, and it matters more here than it sounds, since the exemption available to a non-resident alien is far smaller than the one available to a US citizen or resident, a detail worth reading before any Florida real estate purchase.

How do Calgary and Miami compare on the numbers?

The table below puts each major tax category in Calgary against its Miami equivalent, including the charges that disappear and the ones that replace them.

Calgary (Alberta)Miami (Florida)
Provincial/state income taxFlat 10% to 15%, lowest in CanadaNone
County/city income taxNoneNone (Miami-Dade has no county income tax)
Combined top marginal rateAbout 48% (federal plus Alberta)About 37% (federal only)
Sales tax5% GST onlyAbout 7% (6% state plus 1% county surtax)
Property taxRoughly 0.6% to 0.8% of assessed valueHomestead exemption plus 3% Save Our Homes cap
Land/deed transferNo Alberta land transfer taxDocumentary stamp tax on deeds at closing
Estate taxAlberta estate administration costs on probateNo Florida estate tax; US federal estate tax may apply
RRSP growthNot taxed while accruingNo state addback risk, no Florida return exists

The income tax gap is real, but it’s the smallest of any Canadian city corridor into Miami, precisely because Alberta’s rate was already the lowest in the country.

What should you do before you sign anything?

Model the departure-year gain against Alberta’s actual 15% top bracket before assuming a generic 48% headline applies to your exit. Then pin the departure date, since it decides which Canadian tax year the deemed disposition lands in and how much of the AHCIP tail you get.
