Moving from Calgary to Orlando: Taxes, Simulation, and Central Florida
Calgary to Orlando isn’t the condo-and-retirement file that Calgary to Miami usually is. It’s an energy or aerospace engineer with an offer from Lockheed Martin’s simulation and training division, L3Harris, or Siemens Energy’s US headquarters, and a start date that doesn’t move. The skill set transfers cleanly: reservoir modeling, systems engineering, and simulation work in Calgary’s energy sector map onto Orlando’s simulation and defence corridor almost one for one, just under a different industry label. The departure side is the lightest of any Canadian province, which is the one piece of good news in an otherwise dense filing.
Alberta’s combined federal-plus-provincial top rate runs close to 48%, already the lowest of any province, and Florida charges no state income tax at all, so the corridor still produces a real drop even though Alberta starts from a lower base than Ontario or BC. The departure tax itself is the mildest exit in the country: a flat 15% top provincial rate, no surtax stacked on top. AHCIP coverage ends faster than most provinces too, the last day of the month after you leave, not a three-month tail. The one number that moves the wrong way is sales tax: Alberta’s 5% GST only becomes roughly 6.5% in Orange County, one of the few corridors in this set where consumption tax goes up.
What happens to your tax bill when you leave for Orlando?
Two separate systems stop overlapping. Once Canadian residence genuinely ends, Alberta and federal Canadian tax stop applying to future income, and Florida has no state income tax to fill the gap, so the ongoing return is US federal only. On the way out, Canada still deems a sale of most property you own at fair market value on your departure date, reported on your final T1 and Form T1243 regardless of which Orlando employer signed the offer letter.
- The mechanics of that exit are in Form T1161 and T1243 and the leaving-Canada checklist.
How much of Alberta’s 48% top rate actually disappears?
All of the provincial layer, and it’s a smaller drop than an Ontario or BC mover sees, because Alberta already runs the lowest provincial rate in the country. Alberta’s flat-bracket structure tops out at 15% above roughly $355,845, with no surtax stacked on top the way Ontario layers 20% and 36% surtaxes onto its basic tax. Move to Orlando and that 15% provincial layer disappears entirely, leaving the US federal bracket, 10% to 37%, as the whole story.
| Calgary (Alberta) | Orlando (Florida) | |
|---|---|---|
| Provincial/state income tax | Flat-bracket, 10% to 15% | None |
| City income tax | None | None |
| Combined top marginal rate | About 48% (federal plus Alberta) | About 37% (federal only) |
| Sales tax | 5% GST only | Roughly 6.5% in Orange County (6% state plus 0.5% surtax) |
| Property tax | Roughly 0.6% to 0.8% of assessed value | Roughly 0.9% to 1.1% effective, homestead exemption available |
| Exit tax on departure | Flat 15% provincial share, no surtax | N/A, no state exit tax |
| Estate tax | Alberta charges no separate estate tax | No Florida estate tax; US federal estate tax applies above the exemption |
What happens to AHCIP when you leave Alberta?
Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage ends the last day of the month following your departure month, no three-month tail the way Ontario runs it. Leave Calgary on April 10 and AHCIP coverage runs through May 31, so US health coverage needs to be in place by June 1. A cross-border move qualifies as a Special Enrollment Period event on the federal marketplace, giving 60 days to enroll in an employer plan or a healthcare.gov plan directly.
- Full timelines and notification steps are in the provincial health insurance guide.
Who is actually relocating to Orlando for work?
Working professionals with a signed offer, not retirees chasing the parks. Central Florida’s economy runs on a simulation, training, and defence cluster anchored by Lockheed Martin’s Orlando divisions and L3Harris’s sensors and space work, built up around the modeling-and-simulation ecosystem near UCF Research Park. Siemens Energy runs its US headquarters out of Orlando, EA’s Tiburon studio in Maitland hires gaming engineers, and Disney and Universal both carry large corporate, IT, and finance headcounts that never touch a park gate.
- AdventHealth and Orlando Health add a substantial healthcare employer base, so the corridor pulls beyond engineering into clinical and administrative roles as well.
What happens to your RRSP and TFSA in Florida?
About as clean as this gets, because there’s no state return competing for the same credit. An RRSP stays tax-deferred under the treaty and carries no state addback in Florida, since there’s no state income tax return at all, only the federal one. A TFSA doesn’t get the same treatment: the US treats it as a foreign trust, with Form 3520/3520-A reporting and PFIC exposure on the underlying holdings, and it generally should be collapsed before departure rather than carried across.
- The full treaty election and reporting mechanics are in RRSP and TFSA after moving to the US.
How does Orange County’s sales tax compare to Alberta’s?
It goes up, which surprises almost everyone coming from a GST-only province. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax, the lightest consumption tax load in Canada. Orange County combines Florida’s 6% state rate with a 0.5% county surtax, landing around 6.5%, still below Hillsborough County’s roughly 7.5% but higher than what a Calgary household is used to paying at checkout.
- Neither side charges a land transfer tax on the purchase itself. The state-versus-province mechanics guide covers how sales tax fits into the rest of the comparison.
How do the homestead exemption and Save Our Homes work?
Two separate mechanisms, and the gap between them in year one trips up most new arrivals. If you own the home and it’s genuinely your permanent residence as of January 1, you file Form DR-501 with the Orange County property appraiser by March 1 for up to $50,000 off assessed value. Save Our Homes is a second, later benefit: once you’ve had one exempt year on the roll, annual assessed-value increases are capped at the lesser of 3% or the change in CPI.
Why are Calgary energy engineers landing in Orlando?
The skill sets overlap more than the industry labels suggest. Reservoir modeling, systems engineering, and simulation work built inside Calgary’s energy sector transfer almost directly onto Orlando’s defence and training-simulation employers, since both fields run on physics-based modeling, systems integration, and rigorous validation processes. Lockheed Martin and L3Harris hire for that exact background, and the UCF Research Park corridor has built a modeling-and-simulation talent pool that increasingly recruits outside Florida to fill it.
- This is a genuine sector switch rather than an intracompany transfer, so equity comp and vesting schedules usually start fresh with the new employer rather than carrying over from a legacy Canadian package.
Is there an estate tax bill waiting in Florida?
Not from Florida, but the US federal system above it still applies. Alberta itself charges no separate provincial estate tax, so there’s no Alberta-level bill to compare against in the first place, unlike Ontario’s Estate Administration Tax. Florida charges no state estate tax either, but once you’re a US resident, the federal estate tax exemption threshold governs, and it looks very different for a non-resident alien than for someone who has become a US person.
- The exemption thresholds and how residency status changes them are in the US estate tax and the $60,000 exemption.
What should you do before you sign anything?
Fix the departure date against the Lockheed, L3Harris, or Siemens Energy start date first, since the employer’s date is usually the least flexible piece of the whole move. That date decides which Canadian tax year absorbs the deemed disposition, while the start date drives the closing timeline, the homestead filing, and the first US paycheck’s withholding.
-
Once both dates are set, AHCIP’s shorter wind-down, the RRSP and TFSA handling, and the choice of neighborhood inside UCF Research Park, Lake Nona, or Winter Park become far easier decisions.
