Pest Control Business Deductions: Chemicals, Vehicles, Licensing, and Route Optimization Costs
Pest control businesses have a cost structure that rewards careful tracking. Chemical costs, vehicle expenses, and licensing fees are all deductible, but the vehicle deduction alone can account for $10,000-$20,000 per year per vehicle, making it the single most valuable line item to document properly.
Major deduction categories for pest control businesses:
Chemicals and supplies (deducted when purchased or used):
- Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides
- Bait stations, traps, monitoring devices
- Spray tanks, applicator equipment
- Personal protective equipment (respirators, gloves, suits, boots)
- Safety data sheet (SDS) binders and required documentation
Vehicle expenses (the largest deduction for most operators):
- Standard mileage rate: 70 cents/mile (2025) for business use
- Actual expense method: fuel, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, tolls
- For dedicated business vehicles (no personal use): 100% deductible under either method
- For vehicles with GVWR over 6,000 lbs: full Section 179 deduction in year of purchase (up to $2,500,000 in 2024)
Equipment (Section 179 or de minimis safe harbor):
- Backpack sprayers ($150-$500 each): de minimis safe harbor
- Power sprayers ($1,000-$5,000): de minimis or Section 179
- Thermal foggers ($200-$800): de minimis safe harbor
- Moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras ($200-$2,500): de minimis safe harbor
- Ladders, crawl space gear, attic access equipment

Technology and marketing:

- Google Ads and local service ads (Google Guaranteed)
