Pest Control Business Entity Structure: S-Corp Election, Vehicle Deductions, and QBI for Service Trades

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Pest control businesses are skilled trade operations that benefit significantly from proper entity structure. The business has a favorable tax profile: it is not an SSTB (so the QBI deduction is unlimited), it typically requires company vehicles (deductible), and chemical inventory and equipment create additional deductions. The S-Corp election becomes valuable relatively early because pest control operators often achieve strong margins (30-50% net) on recurring service contracts.

Key takeaway

Pest control business tax profile:

  1. NOT an SSTB. Pest control is a skilled trade, not consulting, health care, or any enumerated SSTB category. The full 20% QBI deduction is available at any income level with no phase-out.

  2. S-Corp break-even is $50,000-$60,000 in net profit. Below that, the payroll processing and S-Corp return costs exceed the SE tax savings. Above that, the savings grow with income.

  3. Vehicle strategy. Most pest control businesses operate service vehicles (trucks, vans). If a vehicle is used exclusively for business (driven from the shop to customer locations and back, never for personal use), 100% of costs are deductible. For vehicles with GVWR over 6,000 lbs, Section 179 allows full expensing in the year of purchase.

  4. Chemical inventory. Pesticides, herbicides, and treatment chemicals can be tracked as supplies (expensed when purchased) or inventory (expensed when used). For most pest control operators, the supply method is simpler and produces a similar tax result.

  5. Recurring revenue model. Pest control businesses with monthly or quarterly service contracts have predictable income, which simplifies estimated tax planning and supports higher business valuations if the owner eventually sells.
