Power Washing Estimated Taxes: Highly Seasonal Revenue and the Annualized Method

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Power washing in northern markets is one of the most seasonal trades, rivaling exterior painting and boat detailing for revenue concentration. An operator in the Midwest or Northeast typically works April through November, with peak months from May through September generating 60-70% of annual revenue. January through March produces near-zero revenue (outdoor surfaces can’t be washed when temperatures are below freezing). This extreme seasonality makes the annualized income installment method (IRC 6654(d)(2)) valuable, saving $2,000-$3,500 in Q1 by matching payments to when income is actually earned. Southern operators have a much milder seasonal pattern (year-round work with a slight winter slowdown) and can use equal quarterly payments.

✓Key takeaway

Power washing estimated tax planning:

Seasonality by market:

  • Northern (Midwest, Northeast, Mountain): highly seasonal. April-November active season. Near-zero December-March. 85-95% of revenue in 7-8 months.
  • Southern (Southeast, Southwest, Gulf Coast): mild seasonality. Year-round work with 10-20% winter slowdown. 55-60% of revenue April-September.
  • Pacific Northwest: rain creates demand for moss/mildew removal year-round, but outdoor washing best April-October.

Northern market monthly revenue pattern (extreme):

  • January: 0-2% of annual
  • February: 0-2%
  • March: 2-4% (booking starts, few jobs)
  • April: 8-10% (season opens)
  • May: 12-14% (peak begins)
  • June: 14-16% (peak)
  • July: 14-16% (peak)
  • August: 12-14% (peak continues)
  • September: 10-12% (slowing)
  • October: 6-8% (winding down)
  • November: 2-4% (final jobs before freeze)
  • December: 0-1%

Equal payments are BAD for northern operators:

  • Q1 (Jan-Mar): $0-$5,000 in revenue, but $4,375 payment due
  • The operator is paying from savings, not current income
  • The annualized method eliminates this mismatch

Off-season strategies that affect estimated taxes:

  • Christmas light installation (October-January): $10,000-$30,000 additional revenue
  • Gutter cleaning (fall): $5,000-$15,000
  • Snow removal (winter): $10,000-$40,000
  • These off-season activities change the estimated tax calculation

How should a seasonal operator plan payments?
