Business Vehicle Deductions: Section 179, Bonus Depreciation, and the 6,000 lb Rule

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

The business vehicle deduction is one of the most complex and most valuable deductions for small business owners. There are two methods (standard mileage rate or actual expenses), different rules for vehicles over and under 6,000 lbs GVWR, depreciation limitations under IRC 280F for passenger vehicles, and a separate SUV cap for Section 179 on vehicles between 6,000 and 14,000 lbs GVWR. Choosing the right method in Year 1 is a binding decision: if you claim depreciation (actual method) in Year 1, you can never switch to standard mileage for that vehicle. The 70 cents/mile standard rate for 2025 is historically high and often produces a larger deduction than the actual method for newer, fuel-efficient vehicles.

Key takeaway

Business vehicle deduction rules (2025):

Standard mileage rate:

  • 70 cents per mile (2025)
  • Covers fuel, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, and repairs
  • Simple: just track miles
  • Available only if you use standard mileage in the FIRST year you use the vehicle for business
  • Cannot use standard mileage if: you claimed depreciation (MACRS or Section 179) on the vehicle, you have 5+ vehicles in service simultaneously, or the vehicle is used for hire (taxi, rideshare)

Actual expense method:

  • Deduct the business-use percentage of: fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, depreciation, lease payments, registration, car washes, parking, tolls
  • Must track all expenses AND mileage (to calculate business-use percentage)
  • More complex but can produce a larger deduction for expensive or high-cost vehicles

IRC 280F limitations (passenger vehicles under 6,000 lbs GVWR):

  • Year 1: $20,400 (with bonus depreciation) or $12,400 (without)
  • Year 2: $19,800
  • Year 3: $11,900
  • Year 4+: $7,160 per year until fully depreciated
  • A $50,000 car takes 6+ years to fully depreciate under these limits

Vehicles OVER 6,000 lbs GVWR (the “heavy vehicle” exception):

  • NO IRC 280F limits
  • Full Section 179 or bonus depreciation available
  • A $60,000 SUV can be fully deducted in Year 1
  • Common qualifying vehicles: most full-size SUVs (Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, GX, X5), pickup trucks, vans
  • The SUV must be used more than 50% for business

Section 179 SUV cap (6,001-14,000 lbs GVWR):

  • Section 179 deduction limited to $30,500 (2025) for SUVs 6,001-14,000 lbs
  • BUT: bonus depreciation has NO SUV cap
  • Strategy: claim $30,500 Section 179 + remaining cost as bonus depreciation = full deduction
  • Or simply use bonus depreciation for the entire cost

Vehicles OVER 14,000 lbs GVWR:

  • No Section 179 cap at all
  • Full Section 179 AND bonus depreciation with no limits
  • Includes: all tow trucks, most box trucks, heavy-duty pickups (F-350+), dump trucks
  • These are fully deductible in Year 1 with no restrictions

Business-use percentage:

  • Only the business-use percentage is deductible
  • If a vehicle is 75% business, 25% personal: deduct 75% of actual expenses or 75% of miles at standard rate
  • Must log mileage to substantiate (IRS requires contemporaneous records)
  • Commuting is NEVER business use (unless you have a qualifying home office)

Standard mileage vs. actual expenses?
