Mobile Car Wash Estimated Taxes: Seasonal Planning and Quarterly Payments
Mobile car wash businesses have mild seasonality compared to most outdoor trades. In warm climates (Florida, Texas, Arizona), the business runs year-round with minimal fluctuation. In four-season markets, the peak runs from April through October (1.5-2x the winter rate), but winter detailing still produces meaningful revenue because customers want interior cleaning, salt removal, and protection treatments. The mild seasonality makes estimated tax planning relatively straightforward. The bigger challenge is the Year 1 to Year 2 cliff: because equipment and vehicle costs are modest ($15,000-$40,000 total) and margins are exceptionally high (75-90%), the Section 179 deduction in Year 1 creates a artificially low tax bill that spikes dramatically in Year 2 when the depreciation is gone and revenue has grown.
Seasonal revenue pattern (four-season market):
| Month | Revenue | % of Annual |
|---|---|---|
| January | $5,000 | 5% |
| February | $5,500 | 5% |
| March | $7,500 | 6% |
| April | $10,000 | 8% |
| May | $12,000 | 10% |
| June | $13,000 | 11% |
| July | $13,000 | 11% |
| August | $12,500 | 10% |
| September | $11,000 | 9% |
| October | $10,000 | 8% |
| November | $7,500 | 6% |
| December | $13,000 | 11% |
| Total | $120,000 | 100% |
December is high because of holiday gift detailing and year-end fleet contracts.
Peak-to-trough ratio: 2.6x (July $13,000 vs. January $5,000) This is moderate. Most outdoor trades have 3-5x or higher ratios.
Warm-climate markets (FL, TX, AZ):
- Near-flat seasonality (1.2-1.5x ratio)
- Summer can actually DIP slightly (customers avoid the heat)
- Year-round steady revenue simplifies estimated tax planning
Estimated tax set-aside: 20-25% of net profit per job
- For a $200 detail with $15 in supplies: net $185, set aside $37-$46
- The high margins mean most of every dollar collected is taxable
- Keep the set-aside in a separate high-yield savings account
