Mobile Car Wash Tax Deductions: Vehicle, Equipment, and Chemical Expenses
Mobile car wash businesses have a simple but effective deduction profile. The vehicle and its setup (van or truck with water tank, generator, pressure washer) is the largest single deduction, often exceeding $30,000 in Year 1 under Section 179 if the vehicle is over 6,000 lbs GVWR. Ongoing deductions are dominated by vehicle operating costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance), followed by chemicals and supplies (soap, wax, towels, microfiber cloths, brushes), and marketing. The chemical costs are unusually low relative to revenue (3-5%), which is why mobile car wash businesses have some of the highest margins in any trade. The key to maximizing deductions is properly categorizing the vehicle setup: the van itself, the tank installation, the generator, and the equipment are all separate depreciable assets (though they can all be Section 179’d in Year 1).
