Plumber Estimated Taxes: Emergency Revenue Spikes and Quarterly Payments

Written by Yarik Yarosh, CPA (US & Canada) September 5, 2026 · FL CPA license AC61704 · CPA Ontario

Plumbing has one of the most stable demand profiles in the trades. Pipes leak, drains clog, and water heaters fail regardless of season. The mild overall seasonality (1.5-2x peak-to-trough) makes equal quarterly estimated payments practical for most plumbers. However, plumbing has an unpredictable element that other steady-demand trades lack: emergency revenue spikes. A polar vortex with frozen pipes, a neighborhood sewer backup, or a water main break can generate $10,000-$20,000 in emergency revenue in a single week at 1.5-2x premium rates. These spikes are almost pure profit (no incremental overhead), which means they create disproportionate tax liability. The plumber who sets aside tax on emergency revenue in real-time (rather than waiting for quarterly estimates) avoids surprises.

Key takeaway

Plumbing seasonal pattern:

MonthRevenueDriver
January$16,000Frozen pipes, water heater failures
February$15,000Late winter emergency calls
March$14,000Thaw/spring line issues
April$16,000Spring projects begin
May$18,000Remodel season
June$19,000Peak remodel/construction
July$18,000Continued construction
August$17,000Steady service calls
September$16,000Back-to-school slowdown
October$15,000Pre-winter prep
November$14,000Shoulder season
December$16,000Holiday emergencies, water heaters
Total$194,000

Peak-to-trough ratio: 1.4x (June $19,000 vs. November $14,000) This is the mildest ratio of any trade we cover. Plumbing is truly year-round.

Emergency spikes (unpredictable overlay):

  • Polar vortex week: +$8,000-$15,000
  • Neighborhood sewer backup: +$5,000-$10,000
  • Major construction project start: +$10,000-$20,000
  • These are additive to the base revenue and can happen in any month

Set-aside: 22-25% of net per job

  • Regular call: set aside $50-$75
  • Water heater replacement: set aside $200-$350
  • Emergency call (premium rate): set aside $100-$150
