Pool Service Tax Deductions: Chemicals, Equipment, and Route Expenses
Pool service is a route-based business where the two dominant expense categories are chemicals (15-25% of revenue) and vehicle costs (10-15% of revenue). Unlike most trade businesses where labor is the overwhelming input, pool service has a meaningful materials component because every visit consumes chlorine, acid, algaecide, or other treatment products. This makes accurate chemical tracking important for both tax deductions and job costing. The vehicle is the second-largest deduction, as pool technicians drive between accounts all day. A solo operator servicing 50-70 pools typically drives 15,000-25,000 business miles per year, worth $10,500-$17,500 at the 70 cent standard mileage rate (2025).
