Power Washing Tax Deductions: Equipment, Chemicals, and Vehicle Expenses
Power washing has among the lowest material costs of any trade (3-8% of revenue), making it one of the highest-margin small businesses. The main chemicals (sodium hypochlorite for soft washing, surfactants, degreasers) cost pennies per square foot. The most significant deductions are equipment (pressure washers, surface cleaners, pumps), vehicle expenses (the truck or van that carries the rig), fuel, and insurance. Equipment costs are moderate ($8,000-$25,000 for a full commercial setup) and qualify for Section 179 or bonus depreciation. The vehicle expense method depends on how the rig is configured: a trailer-mounted setup allows standard mileage on the truck, while a truck-mounted system requires actual expense method since the truck IS the business equipment.
Power washing deduction categories:
Chemicals and cleaning products (3-8% of revenue):
- Sodium hypochlorite (bleach, for soft washing): $0.50-$1.50/gallon, use 5-20 gallons/day
- Surfactant: $20-$50/gallon (diluted heavily, lasts weeks)
- Degreaser (for concrete, commercial): $15-$40/gallon
- Rust remover (oxalic acid): $20-$50/gallon
- Wood brightener: $15-$30/gallon
- Sealer/stain (if offering deck staining): $30-$80/gallon
- Annual chemical cost (solo operator): $3,000-$8,000
- All deductible as supplies or cost of goods sold
Equipment (moderate, one-time):
- Hot water pressure washer: $3,000-$8,000
- Cold water pressure washer: $1,500-$4,000
- Soft wash pump and system: $2,000-$5,000
- Surface cleaner (flat surface attachment): $200-$600
- Hose reels and hose (200-300 ft): $500-$1,500
- Spray tips and guns: $100-$300
- Water tank (100-500 gallon): $200-$1,500
- Chemical tank and injection system: $200-$500
- Generator (if needed for remote locations): $500-$2,000
- Ladder and safety harness: $200-$500
- All Section 179 or bonus depreciation eligible
- Most items under $2,500: de minimis safe harbor (expense immediately)
Trailer vs. truck-mounted (vehicle deduction implications):
- Trailer-mounted rig ($3,000-$10,000): the trailer is separate from the truck
- The truck can use standard mileage rate (70 cents/mile for 2025)
- The trailer is depreciated separately (5-year MACRS)
- This is often the BETTER tax structure: standard mileage is simpler and often higher than actual expenses for newer trucks
- Truck-mounted rig: the pressure washer is permanently installed in the truck bed
- The truck IS the business equipment
- Must use actual expense method (can’t use standard mileage on a vehicle claiming depreciation)
- Fuel, insurance, maintenance, depreciation all deducted as actual expenses
- May be advantageous for older trucks with low payments and high mileage
Vehicle expenses:
- Standard mileage (if trailer setup): 70 cents/mile x 15,000-25,000 miles = $10,500-$17,500
- Actual method (truck-mounted): fuel + insurance + maintenance + depreciation
- Truck fuel: $5,000-$8,000/year
- Equipment fuel (gas-powered washer): $1,000-$2,000/year
Insurance:
- General liability: $800-$2,000/year
- Commercial auto: $1,500-$3,500/year
- Inland marine (equipment): $200-$600/year
- Workers’ comp (if employees): varies
- Pollution liability (for chemical runoff): $300-$800/year (recommended, increasingly required)
- Total: $3,000-$7,000/year
Marketing (higher than average for trades):
- Google Ads: $500-$2,000/month (power washing is competitive)
- Yard signs: $200-$500/year
- Door hangers: $300-$800/season
- Vehicle wrap: $2,000-$5,000 (one-time, depreciable)
- Before/after photos (your own work): free but highly effective
- Website and SEO: $100-$300/month
- Total marketing: $3,000-$12,000/year
